International Association of Professional Birth Photographers 2022 Award Winner Images by Brittney Hogue

Putting your work out there for critiquing is a difficult journey for artists. You start with the need to learn more. You ask questions, you ask for help, for tips. What can I do to make this better?

Then you learn a thing or two and all of a sudden that photograph you created which was the definition of artistry for you is something you’re cringing at and nervous to show more experienced photographers.

At some point as artists, we have to remember to see where we are and celebrate those places too. So if you’re a photographer clicking through my website and seeing only where you could be in years to come— submit something. Celebrate where you are. Be proud of how far you’ve come, of your perseverance, of your dedication to your craft.

2,000 miles from home in the last two hours of submission, I chose photos to submit to the International Association of Professional Birth Photographers Image Competition. Instead of spending weeks sifting through images with my trusty birthy bestie and dissecting previous winning images for hours, I simply chose what spoke to me this year. What spoke to me the most was Lauren’s birth.

These two images are ones I am exceptionally proud of. I chose them for their tones, their contrast, their moment, their balance, their light. I chose them because I could feel Lauren’s love for Atticus in her hands, her body. And because Atticus himself was a unique newborn. His frowning brow and gorgeous cord are details I will never lose in my memories.
